Bali is not one place, and a good week treats it as three: this itinerary spends three nights in Ubud for temples, rice terraces, and waterfalls, two nights on the Bukit peninsula around Uluwatu for the island's best beaches and clifftop sunsets, and two nights in Canggu for surf lessons, beach clubs, and the cafe scene. Each base gets you a different Bali, and the transfers between them (90 minutes to 2.5 hours by private driver) replace the daily long-haul driving that ruins most one-base Bali trips.
The single biggest planning fact about Bali is traffic: there is no real public transport, distances that look short take three times longer than the map suggests, and cramming far-apart sights into one day means spending it in a car. So each day below stays inside one cluster, the big outdoor sights happen before 09:00 (cooler, emptier, better light), and afternoons are for beaches, spas, and doing very little, which is the actual point of Bali.

There is no usable public transport, so you combine three things. Gojek and Grab ride apps are cheap for short hops (a 10 minute scooter ride is 15,000-25,000 IDR, a car 60,000-150,000 IDR) but pickups are restricted near some beaches and temple areas where local taxi cooperatives operate. For sightseeing days and transfers between bases, hire a private driver: about 700,000-900,000 IDR for a 10-hour day including fuel, arranged via WhatsApp the day before, and 400,000-500,000 IDR for a one-way inter-area transfer. Renting a scooter (80,000-120,000 IDR a day) is only sensible if you already ride confidently: you legally need an international driving permit with a motorcycle endorsement, police checkpoints target tourists, and the traffic is unforgiving. Canggu (nights 6-7)
Beginner-friendly surf, beach clubs, and a dense cafe and restaurant scene for the wind-down days. Berawa is the calmer end, Batu Bolong the walk-everywhere middle; Pererenan just north is quieter and 20 percent cheaper.
Indonesia's visa on arrival is 500,000 IDR (about 30 USD) for 30 days; buy it online ahead as an e-VOA to skip one queue. Bali also charges a one-time 150,000 IDR tourist levy per person, payable online at the official Love Bali site before you land.
Carry cash: warungs, beach entries, temple donations, and parking are cash-only. Use ATMs attached to real bank branches (BCA, Mandiri), always decline dynamic currency conversion, and note machines dispense either 50,000 or 100,000 notes.
Arrange drivers by WhatsApp the evening before, agree the price up front (700,000-900,000 IDR for a 10-hour day, fuel included), and share your plan; a good driver will resequence it around traffic and temple ceremonies better than you can.
Only rent a scooter if you already ride: you need an international driving permit with motorcycle endorsement, police checkpoints in Canggu and Kuta target tourists, and travel insurance will not pay out for unlicensed riding. Book the trip skeleton, not every day: the Kecak dance in high season, popular restaurants like Hujan Locale, and inter-area drivers benefit from a day or two of notice; everything else works better with the flexibility to chase good weather.
Seven days does justice to three areas, which is the right number: this plan gives Ubud three nights, the Uluwatu cliffs two, and Canggu two, with under five hours of total transfer driving. It is not enough to add Nusa Penida or the Gili Islands without gutting a base; those need two extra days each including boats. One-base trips that day-trip everywhere spend two to three hours a day in traffic, which is the most common Bali planning mistake.

Most nationalities (90-plus countries, including the US, UK, EU, and Australia) use the visa on arrival: 500,000 IDR, valid 30 days, extendable once for another 30. Buy it online as an e-VOA up to two weeks before flying to skip the payment queue at Denpasar. Your passport needs six months of validity and, in principle, proof of onward travel; separately, pay the 150,000 IDR Bali tourist levy online before arrival.
Only if you already ride confidently at home: the traffic is dense and improvisational, road surfaces vary wildly, and rain turns everything slick. Legally you need an international driving permit with a motorcycle endorsement, and without one your travel insurance is void in a crash, which is the real risk (scooter accidents are the top cause of tourist hospitalization here).
